MTP Applications
Science
By mapping the temperature field about an airborne platform, MTP provides
important meteorological context for in situ measurements of chemical
species by other instruments. However, MTP data may be used to pursue a
number of other scientific investigations. These include (but are not limited
to):
-
Studying atmospheric wave phenomena,
since isentrope (or Lagrangian flow) surfaces are easily mapped.
-
Detecting filament encounters
-
Studying jet streak crossings
-
Cumulo-nimbus anvil sampling
-
Providing context for suspected PSC events
-
Verifying sub-visible cirrus (SVC) detections by lidar measurements
-
Clear air turbulence (CAT) analyses
-
Studying the spectrum of mesoscale temperature fluctuations and their impact
on chemical reaction rates and the determination of aerosol particle size
distributions.
Technology and Engineering
In addition to these science-related areas, MTP has a wealth of possible
applications related to environmental monitoring, avionics, aircraft safety,
and other areas. These include:
-
Clear air turbulence (CAT) prediction
-
Aircraft icing hazard potential determinations
-
"Unstart" prediction for supersonic transports
-
Flight path optimization for commercial aircraft fuel savings
-
Inversion layer measurement for air quality monitoring and safety warning
